What is Anoheal?
Anoheal is also known as diltiazem hydrochloride 2% cream. Diltiazem hydrochloride is the active compound that helps in healing of a tear (an anal fissure) in the skin lining of the anus (the opening to your back passage). It does this by causing the anal sphincter, the muscle surrounding the anus, to relax. This reduces pressure on the anus and increases blood flowing to the muscles, enabling healing of the skin tear. At the same time, diltiazem hydrochloride reduces the pain associated with the torn skin.
Anal tears are usually caused by constipation, when very large or hard stools tear the delicate tissues of the anal canal. Other causes include inflammatory bowel disease, rectal disease, sexually transmitted infections, and childbirth. Without treatment, healing usually occurs within a few weeks but can take much longer. Anal tears cause the area around the anus to itch, bleeding (seen as bright red blood in stools or on toilet paper), and pain on passing stools that may continue for several hours after passing stools.
How to use Anoheal
Anoheal is a cream or an ointment. Squeeze a small amount (about 2.5 cm) of cream or ointment from the tube onto a finger and apply to the skin inside the anus. If preferred, you can wear a disposable glove or cover your finger with cling film to apply the medicine. Wash your hands before and after use, and ensure appropriate disposal of any finger covering. Anoheal is usually used twice daily (morning and evening) unless the doctor has said otherwise. Continue treatment until there is no pain on passing stools (you may need more than one tube of Anoheal), but for no longer than 8 weeks.
Who can use Anoheal?
Adults, children and older people can use Anoheal. An allergy to diltiazem hydrochloride or other constituents of this medicine prohibits it use. As with all medicines, discuss your medical history, any medical conditions that you have, pregnancy and breastfeeding (if appropriate), and all medicines that you have recently taken or currently take with you doctor before beginning this treatment.
Anoheal side effects
Fewer than 10% of people using Anoheal get headaches (not severe or for long periods), dizziness or feel light headed (particularly when standing from sitting or lying down), burning or itching around the anus, or rectal bleeding. Contact your doctor if you are concerned about any side effects.
