Fucithalmic/fusidic acid viscous eye drops

Fucithalmic/Fusidic acid viscous eye drops are used to topically treat eye infections.

What is Fucithalmic/fusidic acid?

Fucithalmic/fusidic acid is an antibiotic that is effective against a range of bacteria, especially Staphylococcus aureus. The active chemical in the product is fusidic acid, hemihydrate. Fucithalmic/fusidic acid viscous eye drops (1% w/w solution) are specifically indicated to treat bacterial conjunctivitis. This medicine is a bacteriostatic, meaning that it does not kill bacteria directly but renders them incapable of increasing in number. Fusidic acid does this by preventing the bacteria from making the proteins that are necessary for their growth and reproduction. Eventually, the bacteria die and your immune system clears them from the body.

How to use Fucithalmic/fusidic acid eye drops

One drop of the Fucithalmic/fusidic acid viscous eye drop solution is put into the eye once in the morning and once at night. This is carried on for at least two days after the eye is back to normal. Stopping the treatment too soon may lead to a return of the infection. The eye drop solution is quite thick and is provided in a tube; it turns more liquid in your eye.

To put the drop into your eye, tilt your head backwards, look up, draw down the lower eyelid, and drop the solution inside the lower eyelid. After releasing the eyelid, blink to spread the solution over the eye. Follow these instructions to treat the other eye if your doctor has advised this. Avoid contaminating the solution by not touching the eyes with the tube tip. Take a missed drop as soon as you remember, if not too near the time of the next scheduled dose, and rise your eyes if too many drops are dispensed. No untoward effects are likely to occur by using too much.

Who can use Fucithalmic/fusidic acid eye drops?

Fucithalmic/fusidic acid viscous eye drops may be used regardless of your age. As the product is unlikely to present a risk to babies, it can also be used by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding if the doctor thinks it is necessary. However, it cannot be used by people who are hypersensitive to fusidic acid or any other component in the solution. It is also recommended that you do not wear contact lenses while using Fucithalmic/fusidic acid viscous eye drops, because it may scratch the cornea of the eye or contact lens. Additionally, the product contains benzalkonium chloride that may result in eye irritation or discolour soft contact lenses.

Although it is not known if fusidic acid affects any other medicines that you take, it is always advisable to let your doctor know what these are. If you are using other topical eye preparations, then ask your doctor about when to use Fucithalmic/fusidic acid viscous eye drops. While in the UK there are no other eye treatments containing fusidic acid, it may be found in ointments and creams for the skin, and tablets and suspensions for oral use.
