We are always on the lookout for new treatments or products
that will help our patients. One of the many innovations that have come to our
attention recently is a new medical device that was presented to the European
Society for Sexual Medicine. The device is designed to help men who suffer from
premature ejaculation and uses a technique called habituation, i.e. training
yourself to control your ejaculation. The device uses a stop start technique and
it appears have demonstrated some success in its trials.
The study underpinning the presentation has been peer reviewed
and it was found that the device was three times more effective than
psychosexual therapy and it allowed men to last on average 11 times longer. The
programme was tested in two London teaching hospitals and we have no reason to
doubt the findings but we should emphasise that we have not seen the data and
we do not know what controls were put in place. The programme is set for 6
weeks and you can do the exercise in private or with your partner.
At the current time, The Online Clinic is prepared to
prescribe Priligy (dapoxetine) for helping with premature ejaculation but this treatment
is expensive and it does not provide a permanent solution: men need to continue
taking the medication every time that they have sex. We will take a look at the
new product, which claims to provide a long term solution and if it is as
effective as the study suggests, we will consider making it available to our
patients. For the time being, we continue to recommend Priligy, which has demonstrated
a high success rate amongst our patients.
