What is Rozex?
Rosacea, also called acne rosacea, is an inflammatory skin condition of the face. It is characterised by redness, small visible blood vessels, and spots (acne), which periodically come and go. Rozex is a medicine that contains an active substance called metronidazole. It is both an antibiotic and antiprotozoic agent, meaning it kills both bacteria and other micro-organisms known as protozoa. It does this by acting on the micro-organisms’ DNA (their genetic material). Rozex therefore treats the infection and clears up the spots associated with rosacea. Rozex also reduces the inflammation and therefore the redness of the skin.
How to use Rozex
Rozex is available as a cream or a gel. As it has been prescribed by your doctor, you must use it as you have been told. After washing and drying your face, the medicine should be applied thinly and well-rubbed in. You usually have to do this twice a day - once in the morning and once at night. After each application, wash your hands. If you get it in your eyes, thoroughly rinse them with lots of warm water. As rosacea is a long-term condition, you may need to use it for more than one course of treatment or as and when it occurs. For this reason, you should not stop applying the medicine until you doctor tells you to do so. It is not a concern if you forget to use this medicine at any time but, as soon as you remember, continue as your doctor told you. However, if you accidently swallow it, you should get medical advice. It is advisable to avoid going out in the sun as well as sunbathing and using sun lamps when using Rozex.
Who can use Rozex?
Rozex can be used by adults and elderly people but it is not recommended for use in children. As with all medicines, it should not be used by those who have an allergy to any of the ingredients in the cream or gel. This medicine can affect the action of other medicines known as anticoagulants that are used to thin the blood (e.g. warfarin and dicoumarin), so let your doctor know if you are taking these or have any blood disorders - indeed, tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking, including those you bought over-the-counter at your chemist. You should not drink alcohol while using this medicine because, while unlikely, the active ingredient can react with alcohol. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breast-feeding, or are trying to have children, as Rozex may not be appropriate to use in these circumstances.
Rozex Side Effects
Some people develop skin irritation when using Rozex; if this applies to you, either apply the medicine less frequently or stop using it until the irritation stops. Rozex can worsen your condition; contact your doctor if you think this is happening to you. It may cause the skin to become dry, itchy and red, and to burn or sting. Occasionally, the medicine can cause nausea, a metallic taste in the mouth, and tingling and numbness of the fingers and toes. Facial swelling, skin peeling and contact dermatitis have also been known to occur.
