What is Zomig?
Zomig (also known as zolmitriptan) is one of the class of medicines called 5HT1B- and 5HT1D-receptor agonists, and is often referred to as a triptan. Symptoms of migraine headaches, such as headache, sickness, and sensitivity to light and noise, are thought to occur because blood vessels in the brain dilate. Zomig has the effect of causing these blood vessels to constrict, causing the headache and other symptoms to disappear.
How to use Zomig
Zomig has three available forms: a tablet, an orodispersible tablet, and a nasal spray. All forms are taken as soon as the migraine headache begins or anytime during the course of the headache. You can take Zomig either with or without food. Each preparation should be taken as you have been told by your doctor, who will also explain what to do should the symptoms come back or not go away. For most people:
- One 2.5 mg tablet is swallowed whole with water
- One 2.5 mg or 5 mg orodisperible tablet is placed on the tongue. It will dissolve and is swallowed with saliva (you do not need a drink of water)
- One nasal spray 5 mg is sprayed into either nostril
With all forms, a second dose can be taken two hours later or if the migraine headache comes back within 24 hours. You must not take the medicine more than twice in 24 hours. Contact your doctor if you exceed these doses, or you take more than 10 mg in a day, or if the medicine does not work.
Who can use Zomig?
Zomig is for people needing treatment for migraine headache. It should be used by adults who are 18–65 years of age (that is not by people less than 18 years old or more than 65 years old).
Do not use Zomig if you have an allergy to this medicine or to any of the other ingredients in the product. To note is that you may not be able to take the tablets if you have a sugar intolerance, or take the orodispersible tablets if have phenylketonuria and must avoid phenylalanine.
You should tell your doctor if you have or have had any of the following: high blood pressure, any heart complications, or a stroke or mini-stroke. Also mention if you are at risk of heart problems, you smoke, have had liver disease, or suffer other types of headache. Your other medication is important; especially discuss with your doctor those medicines that you take for depression (including St John’s Wort) or for headaches/migraine, any antibiotics, and cimetidine. As with all medicines, let your doctor know if you are pregnant, trying for a baby, or breast feeding.
Zomig Side Effects
Most side effects of Zomig are mild and disappear relatively quickly. Common effects reported include drowsiness, headaches, palpitations, skin sensitivity, feeling or being sick, dry mouth, stomach ache, muscle weakness, and heavy or tight feelings. The nasal spray may upset your sense of taste, and cause nose bleeds and nose sensitivity. Uncommonly, people experience a very rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, and frequently need to urinate. Allergic reactions, chest or stomach pain, heart attack, or stroke are very rare. You should always tell your doctor immediately if it you suffer any side effects, particularly if they are severe or continuous.
