What is Kliofem?
Kliofem is known as a continuous combined hormone replacement therapy (HRT). It is made up of two female hormones – estradiol (2 mg) that is the same as that made by a woman's ovaries, and norethisterone acetate (1 mg) that is a synthetic progestagen and acts like a woman's progesterone.
Many women experience certain symptoms after the menopause, particularly hot flushes of the face, neck, and chest, a dry/itchy vagina, irregular periods, insomnia, night-time sweats, and mood changes. Such symptoms are a result of the ovaries producing less of the hormone oestrogen. Additionally, oestrogen prevents bone loss (osteoporosis), which leads to weakened bones and fractures. Kliofem replaces (hence the term HRT) the short-fall of oestrogen in the body, thereby minimising the risk of menopausal symptoms and osteoporosis.
How to use Kliofem
Take one Kliofem tablet with water at around the same time every day. The tablets are supplied in a circular dispenser that delivers one tablet in turn. When you have finished all these tablets start the next pack without a break. Start Kliofem on the day of your choice unless you have changed over from another HRT that gives you a monthly bleed. If this is the case, start Kliofem when the bleed has stopped. If you miss taking a pill at the usual time, then take it when remembering if within 12 hours; otherwise, leave this tablet and take the next at the normal time. Taking too many pills may make you feel or be sick. It is always reassuring to talk to the doctor if you are worried or get out of routine. Visit your doctor regularly while taking Kliofem.
Who can use Kliofem?
Kliofem is for postmenopausal women who have a womb. This HRT will not prevent pregnancy (so use other means), and is neither for pregnant or breast-feeding women. Inform your doctor of your family medical history as well as your own, and any surgery that you have to or may have to have.
As with all HRT, some disorders prevent women from taking Kliofem. These are breast, endometrial or other oestrogen-sensitive cancer, an unusually thick womb lining, bleeding from the vagina, disorders of the blood causing blood clots in blood vessels (leading to thromboembolism, stroke or heart attack) or porphyria, liver abnormalities, or you are allergic to the products in Kliofem. Some disorders are exacerbated or come back if you take Kliofem, including womb disorders, high blood pressure, diabetes, fluid retention, kidney/liver problems, high blood fat (triglycerides) levels, gallstones, asthma, severe headaches/migraine, epilepsy, and disease of the ear (otosclerosis) or immune system (systemic lupus erythematosus). You could also be at increased risk of blood clots and oestrogen-dependent cancer.
If taken alongside Kliofem, a few medicines may cause irregular bleeds (notably treatments for epilepsy, tuberculosis and HIV, and products containing St John's Wort). Kliofem's effect may be increased with ketoconazole, and cyclosporine's effect and blood test findings may be altered by Kliofem.
