What is Diflucan (Fluconazole)?
Diflucan (Fluconazole) is a medicine that is used to treat fungal infections. It is mainly prescribed to treat vaginal or penile thrush, which is caused by a type of fungus or yeast called candida albicans. Candida can live harmlessly on the skin without causing any issues or problems. However, in certain circumstances their numbers can multiply and cause an infection to occur. This manifests as itching, redness and soreness. There is also a typical white discharge that looks a bit like cottage cheese. Although thrush is not a sexually transmitted infection per se, men can sometimes get penile thrush as a result of sexual contact. Often both partners are treated, especially if one of them has recurring symptoms.
How to use Fluconazole?
Fluconazole comes in the form of a capsule. It is so effective against thrush that a single dose of 150 mg is all you need to take in order to kill the fungal infection. Depending on your symptoms and past experience, you may be prescribed an antifungal cream as well. This helps treat the local symptoms.
The fluconazole capsule should be taken with plenty of water. To assist in the healing process it is helpful to keep the affected area clean and dry, and to wear loose fitting underwear. Please remember to avoid using perfumed soaps or vaginal deodorants. Your symptoms should be completely cleared within 7 days. If not then ask your doctor about further treatment.
Who can use Fluconazole?
If you complete a consultation form we can tell you if fluconazole is appropriate for you. You should not take fluconazole if you have lactose intolerance, or if you are taking certain types of medicine for allergy, irregular heartbeat, mental health or stomach problems. Other types of medicines may also be affected by taking fluconazole. We will be able to advise you about this once we have all the details.
You will not be able to use fluconazole if you are pregnant. A single dose of fluconazole can be taken if you are breastfeeding. If you require a longer course then this may not be compatible with breastfeeding.
This medicine cannot be prescribed if you have previously suffered an allergic reaction to it or to any other type of antifungal medication.
Fluconazole side effects
Most people do not experience any side effects. Fewer than one in 10 people develop mild abdominal upset, headache-like symptoms or an itchy rash. In the very unlikely event that you develop a rash or notice that your urine is dark and your stools are pale, you must see your doctor at once. Also make an urgent appointment if you experience a change in heart rhythm, notice unexpected bruising or become unusually tired and listless. Please remember that these side effects are extremely rare but must be reported if they are experienced.
